Tilt Steering Column: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Sequoia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ACC or ON, DTCs will be recorded.
  1. Remove Steering Wheel Pad. 
    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2. Remove the 2 steering wheel lower No. 2 covers.
      3. NOTE: Loosen the screw until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    3. Using a Torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx screws.
      4. WARNING:
      • When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.

      • Never disassemble the wheel pad. 
      • When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
    4. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    5. Disconnect the terminal. See Fig 2.
  2. Remove Steering Wheel. 
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.

    3. Using SST, remove the wheel.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021).

    4. Disconnect the connector.
  3. Remove The 3 Screws, Upper And Lower Column Covers. 
  4. Remove Combination Switch With Spiral Cable. 
    1. Disconnect the 4 connectors.
    2. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    3. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch.
    5. NOTE: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
  5. Remove  Spiral Cable  . 
  6. Remove Cowl Side Trim And Front Door Scuff Plate. 
  7. Remove Lower LH Finish Panel. 
    1. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood lock release lever from the panel.
    2. Remove the 4 panel set bolts and lower LH finish panel.
  8. Remove No. 2 Heater To Register Duct. 
  9. Remove Brake Pedal Return Spring. 
  10. Remove No. 2 Intermediate Shaft Assembly. 
    1. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 universal joint assembly and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.

    2. Remove the "A" bolt.
    3. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and control valve shaft.
    4. Remove the "B" bolt.
    5. Slide the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and remove the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
  11. Remove The 3 Bolts And Column Hole Cover No. 2  .

  12. Disconnect The Transmission Control Cable Assembly From The Column Shift Lever Assembly.

  13. Remove Steering Column Assembly With No. 2 Universal Joint Assembly 
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2. Remove the 4 steering column set nuts.
    3. Pull out the steering column assembly with No. 2 universal joint assembly.
  14. Remove No. 2 Universal Joint Assembly. 
    1. Place matchmarks on the steering column assembly and No. 2 universal joint assembly.

    2. Remove the bolt and No. 2 universal joint assembly.
  15. Remove Steering Angle Sensor And Steering Angle Sensor Adapter.
