Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus ES 330. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe passenger-side air bag off indicator for proper operation. See step PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG ON/OFF LIGH Passenger-side air bag on/off light under . If passenger-side air bag indicator operates properly, go to next step. If passenger-side air bag indicator does operate properly, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connectors. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If passenger-side air bag indicator does not come on, go to next step. If passenger-side air bag indicator comes on, replace heater control housing. See HEATER CONTROL HOUSING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access heater control housing and disconnect harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminals No. 17 (Red wire, circuit P-AB) and No. 23 (Red/Black wire, circuit PAON). See Figure. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness between air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing.
- Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminals No. 17 and 23. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness between air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing.
- Reconnect air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing harness connectors. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 60 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 60 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 43/B1660 is not displayed, system is functioning normally at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If DTC 43/B1660 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access heater control housing and disconnect harness connector. See HEATER CONTROL HOUSING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure air bag sensor assembly harness connectors are disconnected. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of heater control housing connector A14, terminals No. 13 (Red/Black wire, circuit PAON) and No. 9 (Red wire, circuit P-AB). See Fig 1. If voltage is 10-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10-14 volts, replace heater control housing.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Connect jumper wire between harness side of heater control housing connector A14, terminals No. 13 and No. 9. Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminals No. 17 (Red wire, circuit P-AB) and No. 23 (Red/Black wire, circuit PAON). See Figure. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace wire harness between air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing.
- Remove jumper wire. Connect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminals No. 17 and 23. If voltage less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace wire harness between air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly and heater control housing harness connectors.
