Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Sequoia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Start the inspection from step  1 in case of using the TOYOTA hand-held tester and start from step  2 in case of not using TOYOTA hand-held tester.
  1. Check Output Value Of Speed Sensor. 

    Preparation  :

    1. Connect the TOYOTA hand-held tester to the DLC3. See Figure.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the TOYOTA hand-held tester main switch ON.
    3. Select the DATALIST mode on the TOYOTA hand-held tester.

      Check  : There is no difference between the speed value output from the speed sensor displayed by the TOYOTA hand-held tester and the speed value displayed by the speedometer when driving the vehicle.

      OK  : There is almost no difference from the displayed speed value.

      HINT: There is tolerance of +/- 10 % in the speedometer indication.

      1. OK  : Go to step  4.
      2. NG  : Go to next step.
  2. Check Speed Sensor. 

    Front preparation  :

    1. Make sure that there is no looseness at the connector lock part and connecting part of the connector.
    2. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.

      Check  : Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the speed sensor connector.

      OK  : Resistance: 1.4-1.5 kΩ.

      Check  : Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of speed sensor connector and body ground. See Fig 1.

      OK  : Resistance: One MΩ or higher.

    Rear preparation:

    1. Make sure that there is no looseness at the connector lock part and connecting part of the connector.
    2. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.

      Check  : Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the speed sensor connector.

      OK  : Resistance: 1.4-1.5 kΩ.

      Check  : Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the speed sensor connector and body ground. See Fig 1.

      OK  : Resistance: One MΩ or higher.

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal last. See step  f under PRECHECK.

      NG  : Replace speed sensor.

      OK  : Go to next step.

  3. Check For Open And Short Circuit In Harness And Connector Between Each Speed Sensor And Skid Control ECU. See  HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE 
    1. NG  : Repair or replace harness or connector.
    2. OK  : Go to step  4.
  4. Check Sensor Installation. 

    Check  : Check the speed sensor installation. See Fig 2.

    OK  : the installation bolt is tightened properly and there is no clearance between the sensor and front steering knuckle or rear axle carrier.

    Torque: 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf) 

    1. NG  : Replace speed sensor.
    2. OK  : Go to step  5.
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal last. See step  f under PRECHECK.

  5. Check Speed Sensor And Sensor Rotor Serrations. 

    (REFERENCE) INSPECTION USING OSCILLOSCOPE

    • Preparation:  Connect the oscilloscope to the terminals FR+ - FR-, FL+- FL-, RR+- RR- AND RL+-RL- of the skid control ECU. See Fig 3.
    • Check:  Drive the vehicle at about 20 km/h (12 MPH), and check the signal waveform.
      NOTE:
      1. As the vehicle speed (wheel revolution speed) increases, a cycle of the waveform becomes shorter and the fluctuation in the output voltage becomes greater.
      2. When noise is identified in the waveform on the oscilloscope, error signals are generated due to the speed sensor rotors' scratches, looseness or foreign matter deposited on it.

      OK  : Check and replace skid control ECU.
    NOTE: When replacing the ECU, perform the zero point calibration. See step  6, under PRE-CHECK.
    NG  : Go to step  6.
  6. Check Sensor Rotor And Sensor Tip. Front preparation  : Remove the DISC .

    Check  : the sensor rotor serrations. See Fig 4.

    OK  : No scratches, missing teeth or foreign objects.

    Preparation  : Remove the front speed sensor. SeeDISC .

    Check  : The sensor tip.

    OK  : No scratches or foreign objects on the sensor tip.

    NOTE: If foreign matter (including that on the sensor rotor side) is identified, remove it and after reassembling, check the output waveform.

    Rear Preparation  : Remove the AXLE SHAFTS - FRONT .

    Check  : Check the sensor rotor serrations. See Fig 5.

    OK  : No scratches, missing teeth or foreign objects.

    Preparation  : Remove the rear speed sensor.

    Check  : the sensor tip.

    OK  : no scratches or foreign objects on the sensor tip.

    NG  : Replace speed sensor or rotor.

    NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal last. See step  f under PRE-CHECK.

    If foreign matter (including that on the sensor rotor side) is identified, remove it and after reassembling, check the output waveform.

    OK  : Check and replace skid control ECU.

    NOTE: When replacing the ECU, perform the zero point calibration. See step  6 under PRE-CHECK.
