Axle Shafts: Disassembly

- Using screwdriver, remove inboard joint boot clamps. Separate inboard joint boot from joint.
- Paint alignment marks on tripod and inboard and outboard joint shafts. DO NOT punch marks.
- Remove inboard joint from outboard joint shaft.
- Using snap ring expander, remove the tripod retaining snap ring from axle shaft.
- Paint alignment marks on left outboard joint shaft and tripod. DO NOT punch marks.
- Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove tripod from front drive shaft assembly. DO NOT tap roller.
- Use side cutter to cut left axle shaft damper clamp and remove it. Remove damper. See Fig 1.
- Remove outboard joint boot clamps using side cutter. Remove clamps.
- Remove outboard joint boot.
- Remove axle shaft hole snap ring using screwdriver.
- Mounting axle shaft in soft jaw vise. Using bearing remover tool and press, remove left axle inboard joint dust cover.
- Using press, remove right axle shaft inboard joint dust cover.
- Using bearing remover tool and press, remove axle shaft dust cover.
- Using snap ring pliers, remove axle shaft hole snap ring.
- Using press, remove front axle bearing.
