Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Wait 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve codes. See RETRIEVING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 36/B1148 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 36/B1148 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
- Access front air bag sensor. See FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure front air bag sensor connector is properly connected. If connector is properly connected, go to next step. If connector is not properly connected, reconnect connector and go to next step.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position.
- Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire) and No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire) individually. See Figure. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire) and No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire) individually. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, go to step 9.
- Connect fused jumper wire between front air bag sensor harness connector terminals. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire) and No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire). If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Connect front air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. If DTC 36/B1148 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 36/B1148 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
- Disconnect Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector. Sub harness connector is located on cowl side panel under right side of instrument panel. Measure voltage between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector Black/White and Brown/White wires. If voltage is less than one volt, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace engine room wire harness between sub harness connector and front air bag sensor.
- Disconnect Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector. Sub harness connector is located on cowl side panel under right side of instrument panel. Measure resistance between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector Black/White and Brown/White wires. If resistance is more than one megohm, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace engine room wire harness between sub harness connector and front air bag sensor.
- Disconnect Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector. Sub harness connector is located on cowl side panel under right side of instrument panel. Connect fused jumper wire between front air bag sensor harness connector terminals. Measure resistance between front air bag sensor side of Yellow, 2-pin front air bag sensor sub harness connector Black/White and Brown/White wires. If resistance is less than one ohm, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT .
