Valve Clearance Adjustment
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine "V" bank and side covers. Remove air cleaner and intake air duct. Remove ignition coils. Remove retaining bolt, engine oil dipstick and guide tube. Remove retaining bolt, transmission dipstick and guide tube.
- Remove PCV hose from left hand valve cover. Remove 2 EVAP hoses and bracket from left hand valve cover. Remove wiring harness retaining clamp from left hand valve cover bracket. Remove bolt and remove wiring harness clamp bracket from front right hand camshaft bearing cap. Remove valve cover retaining bolts and remove valve covers.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. No. 1 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from rear of engine. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover, and dot marks on left hand camshaft gears align with each other. See Fig 1.
- If timing marks do not align, rotate crankshaft clockwise one revolution, and recheck alignment.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on specified valves shown. See Fig 2. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees), and realign crankshaft pulley timing mark with "0" mark on timing belt cover. Measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on specified valves as shown. See Fig 3. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (1)
Application In. (mm) Exhaust Valve .010-.014 (.25-.36) Intake Valve .006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold. - If valve clearance requires adjustment, remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT - 4.3L article. Remove camshafts. See CAMSHAFT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Carefully remove valve lifter and adjusting shim. DO NOT allow adjusting shim to drop into cylinder head when removing lifter.
- Using an outside micrometer, measure and record thickness of removed adjusting shim. Using measured valve clearance, added to measured shim thickness, select proper replacement adjusting shim. See CALCULATING VALVE CLEARANCE table. See Fig 4 and Fig 5
. Install NEW selected adjusting shim and reinstall lifter.CALCULATING VALVE CLEARANCE
Specification (1)(2) Application "A" Thickness Of New Shim "B" Thickness Of Used Shim "C" Measured Valve Clearance (1) Intake "A" = "B" + ("C" - .008 in. (.20 mm)). (2) Exhaust "A" = "B" + ("C" - .012 in. (.30 mm)). - Reinstall camshafts. See CAMSHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reinstall timing belt. See TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT - 4.3L article. Recheck valve clearance.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
