Timing Belt: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus LS 430 and 2002 Lexus GS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower engine cover. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner inlet. Remove "V" bank cover from top of engine. On LS 430, also remove engine room side covers. On all models, remove air cleaner assembly and intake air connector pipe.
  2. Remove serpentine drive belt by turning drive belt tensioner pulley bolt COUNTERCLOCKWISE. Tensioner pulley bolt has LEFT-HAND threads.
  3. Remove radiator hoses and disconnect ECM outlet duct. Disconnect electric cooling fan wiring connectors and ECT switch connector for cooling fan. Disconnect automatic transmission oil cooler hoses from radiator. Remove upper radiator supports, and remove radiator and cooling fan assembly.
  4. Remove No. 2 drive belt idler pulley. See Fig 1. Remove water by-pass pipe from left side No. 3 timing belt cover. Remove No. 3 left side timing belt cover. See Fig 1. Remove No. 3 right side timing belt cover and No. 2 timing belt cover.
  5. Remove A/C compressor from engine with hoses attached. Move A/C compressor out of way. Remove No. 1 drive belt idler pulley. See Fig 1.
CAUTION: If reusing timing belt, check that there are 3 mating marks on belt to show installed position on crankshaft and camshaft timing sprockets. See Fig 2. If marks are missing, place installation mating marks on timing belt and camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Also, mark belt with arrow to indicate original direction of rotation.
  6. Using Pulley Holder (09213-70010 or 09213-70011) or equivalent and Handle (09330-00021) or equivalent, hold crankshaft pulley. Loosen, but do not remove crankshaft pulley bolt.
  7. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is about 50 degrees after TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from rear of engine. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig 3.
  8. Timing marks on camshaft sprockets must align with timing marks on timing belt rear plates. See Fig 3. If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft CLOCKWISE one complete revolution (360 degrees).
  9. Rotate crankshaft CLOCKWISE about 50 degrees. Place timing mark on crankshaft pulley in line with centers of crankshaft pulley bolt and No. 2 timing belt idler pulley bolt. See Fig 3.
CAUTION: If the timing belt is disengaged with the crankshaft pulley at the wrong angle, this can cause the piston head and valve head to come into contact with each other when you remove the camshaft timing pulley, causing damage. Always set the crankshaft pulley at the correct angle.
  10. Without moving crankshaft pulley, remove pulley bolt. Alternately loosen 2 bolts, and remove timing belt tensioner and dust boot. DO NOT hold timing belt tensioner with push rod facing DOWN. See Fig 1.
NOTE: When re-using timing belt: If the installation marks have disappeared, before removal of the timing belt, place 2 new installation marks on the timing belt to match the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys.
NOTE: When replacing timing belt tensioner only: To avoid meshing of the timing pulley and timing belt, secure one of them with string. Place matchmarks on the timing belt and right side camshaft timing pulley.
  11. Using spanner wrench, slightly rotate right side camshaft sprocket CLOCKWISE to relieve tension on timing belt. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprockets.
  12. Remove camshaft timing sprockets, power steering pump pulley and generator. Remove serpentine drive belt tensioner. Using gear puller, remove crankshaft pulley without rotating crankshaft.
  13. Remove No. 1 timing belt cover. See Fig 4. Noting installed direction for reassembly reference, remove timing belt guide from end of crankshaft. Remove timing belt cover spacer.
  14. If not present, place mating mark on timing belt and crankshaft timing sprocket. Remove timing belt.
  15. If necessary, use a 10-mm hexagon wrench to remove No. 1 idler pulley bolt, idler pulley and plate washer. To remove No. 2 idler pulley, remove the bolt and idler pulley. To remove crankshaft timing sprocket, use Puller (09950-50013). Do not turn the timing pulley during removal.
NOTE: Note size and location of idler pulley bolts for reassembly reference.
