Diagnosis & Repair

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool, as freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected.
NOTE: Normal mode vibration frequency of knock sensor is 6 kHz to 15 kHz. If oscilloscope is available, knock sensor No. 1 and No. 2 operation may be checked by reading knock sensor waveform patterns with engine at 4000 RPM. See Fig 4 for proper probe placement and terminal selections.

For circuit wiring diagram, diagnosis and repair procedure, see Fig 1-Fig 4 . The 6-pin connector ED1 is located rear side of right bank cylinder head.

For ECM location, see Figure. For ECM connector view, see Figure. Knock sensors are located on cylinder block, just below cylinder head and under intake manifold. See Fig 5. For testing of systems or components, see SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - V6 & V8 article. For removal and installation of components, see REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article.
