Shock Absorber With Coil Spring: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus LS 430, 2003 Lexus LS 430, and 2002 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Using 2 Special Tools (09727-30021), compress coil spring until there is clearance on both ends. Do NOT use an impact wrench as it will damage special tool. Set 2 special tools crosswise taking care not to interfere with each other's arms. When compressing coil spring, tighten 2 special tools alternately so spring is compressed uniformly. See Fig 1.
  2. Remove suspension support center nut and rebound stopper. See Fig 2.
  3. Remove insulator from coil spring.
  4. Compress and extend shock absorber and check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual sounds. If there is any abnormality, replace shock absorber with a new one.
  5. CAUTION: Gas coming out is harmless. Be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.
  6. If disposing of old shock absorber, fully extend shock absorber rod. Place shock absorber horizontally to prevent oil from coming out. Using a drill, make a hole on top of shell to discharge gas inside. See Fig 3.
