Pneumatic Cylinder: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus LS 430, 2003 Lexus LS 430, and 2002 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off.
- Remove front wheel.
- Disconnect appropriate one touch air connector of front height control valve and bleed air. See Fig 1.
- Place matchmarks on height control sensor link and bracket. Remove nut and disconnect sensor link. See Fig 2.
- Remove bolts and height control sensor.
- Remove clip and nut. Using Special Tool (09610-20012), disconnect steering knuckle from upper control arm. See Fig 3. Support steering knuckle securely.
- Remove bolt and nut to disconnect pneumatic cylinder from lower control arm. See Fig 4.
- Remove grommet from body.
- Pinch part "A" of connector No. 1 to release housing and pull out connector No. 1. See Fig 5.
- Set Special Tool (09730-00010) to tube. See Fig 6.
- Install Special Tool (09730-00010) into housing and spread claws of connector No. 2. See Fig 7. While Special Tool is inserted, pull out air tube. DO NOT pull air tube by unreasonable force.
- Using a screwdriver, remove connector No. 2, 2 "O" rings and plate from housing.
- Remove nuts and actuator cover.

- Turn actuator counterclockwise to 40 degrees and remove upward.
- Remove nuts, suspension support and pneumatic cylinder. See Fig 8.
- Lift up dust cover and check that rolling diaphragm is not damaged or cracked. See Fig 9. If damage or cracks exist, replace pneumatic cylinder. Return dust cover to original position.
- Compress and extend pneumatic cylinder and check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual operation sounds. If pneumatic cylinder is not normal, replace it. To dispose of old cylinder, fully extend pneumatic cylinder. Using a drill, make a hole in cylinder to remove gas inside. See Fig 10.
- Check that there is a difference in damping force when rod is positioned as shown. See Fig 11.
CAUTION:
Gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.
