Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tundra, and 2001 Toyota Tundra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: To determine which speed sensor circuit is malfunctioning, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. For DTCs 31 or 32, go to next step. For DTCs 33 or 34, go to step  2.
  1. Disconnect front wheel speed sensor wiring harness connector. Measure resistance between wheel speed sensor terminals 1 and 2. Resistance should be 0.6-2.5 k/ohms or 0.9-1.8 k/ohms at 20°C. Measure resistance between chassis ground and each wheel speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 2. Resistance should be one megohm or greater. If resistance is as specified, go to step  3. If resistance is not as specified, replace wheel speed sensor. See FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Disconnect rear wheel speed sensor wiring harness connector. Measure resistance between wheel speed sensor terminals No. 1 and 2, and between terminals No. 3 and 4. See Fig 1. Resistance should be 0.89-1.29 k/ohms. Measure resistance between ground and each wheel speed sensor terminal. Resistance should be one megohm or greater. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace wheel speed sensor. See REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Check for open or short circuit in wiring harness between affected wheel speed sensor and ABS ECU. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  4. If oscilloscope is available, check speed sensor signal wave form. Remove ABS ECU. Do not disconnect electrical connectors. Connect oscilloscope between GND terminal and terminals FR+, FL+, RR+ and RL+ at ABS ECU connector. See ABS ECU PIN VOLTAGES . Drive vehicle at 12 MPH and observe signal wave form. Signal should be smooth and consistent without any irregular wave forms. If wave form is smooth and consistent, replace ABS ECU. If wave form is not smooth and consistent, go to next step.
  5. Check wheel speed sensor in question for proper installation. Check sensor rotors for damage. Front brake rotor or rear axle shaft must be removed for sensor rotor inspection. On 4WD models, see AWD & FWD AXLE SHAFTS . On all models, see DIFFERENTIALS & AXLE SHAFTS - REAR INTEGRAL HOUSING . Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, replace ABS ECU. See ABS ECU/ACTUATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
