Rear Sensor Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota Prius, 2002 Toyota Prius, and 2001 Toyota Prius. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove rear wheel. Disconnect speed sensor connector. Remove speed sensor with rear axle hub. See appropriate REAR SUSPENSION article.
  2. Using a pin punch and hammer, drive out 2 pins and remove the 2 attachments from special tool (09520-00031). Mount the axle hub assembly in a soft jaw vise. Using the special tool (09520-00031, 09520-00040 or 09521-00020) and bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm), remove the ABS speed sensor. See Fig 1. If necessary, replace speed sensor wiring harness. Remove seat cushion, seatback and quarter trim. Disconnect speed sensor wiring harness connector. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding the sensor wiring harness from the lower arm body.
  3. To install, clean contacting surface of the axle hub and a NEW speed sensor. Place the ABS speed sensor on the axle hub so that the connector is set at the bottom under the on-vehicle condition. See Fig 2.

Using the special tool (09214-76011) and a press, install a NEW ABS speed sensor to the axle hub. See Fig 3. Torque all mounting hardware to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
