Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus RX 300 and 2002 Lexus RX 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If not using the hand-held tester, begin with step  2.
  1. Check the position sensor signal. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. See Figure. Turn the ignition switch ON and the hand-held tester main switch ON. Select the DATA LIST mode on the hand-held tester.
    • When operating each adjustment function of the seat by turning the power seat control switch of the vehicle, check that Position Sensor value changes on the screen of the hand-held tester.
      • NOTE: When the seat is moved to the limit positions, Lock is displayed in the column of Motor Status on the screen of the hand-held tester. At that time, if the power seat control switch is released, it turns OFF.
    • When operating each adjustment function of the seat by turning the power seat control switch of the vehicle, check that Motor Status changes from OFF to ON in the screen of the hand-held tester.
    If both Position Sensor value and Motor Status are changing, check and replace the power seat position ECU. If the results are not as specified, go to the next step.
    2. NOTE: When battery positive voltage is applied to the motor connector terminals, (+) and (-) are interchangeable.
  2. Check the position sensor. Disconnect the connector of the sensor and the connector of the motor leading to the sensor. Connect the positive (+) lead to terminal No. 3 of the sensor and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 2. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Measure the voltage between terminal No. 1 of the sensor and body ground when battery positive voltage is applied between terminals No. 1 and 2 of the motor connector. See INSPECTING SEAT POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. If results are OK, go to the next step. If the results are not OK, replace the power seat motor. See FRONT SEAT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    INSPECTING SEAT POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE

    Condition Voltage
    Motor Stopped (Check Several Times With Motor In A Different Position Each Time) 0 Volt Or B+ Voltage According To Stop Position
    Motor Running Half Of B+ Voltage
  3. Check the wiring harness and connectors between the power seat position ECU and position sensors. If the results are OK, check and replace the power seat position ECU. If the results are not OK, repair or replace the wiring harness or connectors.
