Test No. 18: Open Door Indicator Light Does Not Light Up

NOTE: Door courtesy switches provide information to activate the OPEN DOOR indicator light. The door courtesy switches are monitored by the multiplex communication system. Ensure multiplex communication system is operating properly. See MULTIPLEX CONTROL SYSTEMS - AVALON article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If the multiplex communication system is functioning properly and no diagnostic trouble codes are stored, the body control system must be interrogated next. The body control system monitors the door courtesy switches and turns on the warning light. See BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS - AVALON article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

Check DOME fuse (7.5-amp) in driver side junction block located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure. If DOME fuse is okay, go to next step. If DOME fuse is defective, replace fuse and repair wiring harness or electrical connector on wiring circuit as necessary. See INTERIOR LIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
Turn ignition off. Disconnect door courtesy switch single-pin electrical harness connector. Using a fused-jumper wire, ground Red/White wire of door courtesy switch. OPEN DOOR indicator light should illuminate. If indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If indicator light does not illuminate, check light bulb. If light bulb is okay, go to next step. If light bulb is defective, replace light bulb. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
Check wiring harness and connectors between OPEN DOOR indicator light and body control electronic control unit. See INTERIOR LIGHTS and INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wiring and connectors are okay, go to next step. Repair wiring and connectors as required. After repairs have been made, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
Check door courtesy switch. See DOOR COURTESY SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If door courtesy switch is okay, go to next step.
Check body control system. See BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS - AVALON article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If body control system is okay, go to next step.
Check ECU-ACC (5-amp), ECU-IG No. 2 (10-amp), GAUGE No. 1 (10-amp), PANEL (5-amp), and RADIO (15-amp) fuses in driver side junction block located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure. If fuses are okay, go to next step. If fuses are defective, repair short in wiring connected to identified fuse. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repairs have been made, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
Check multi-display information center ground circuits. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If ground circuits are faulty, repair and retest system. If ground circuits are okay, substitute original multi-display information center with a known-good unit and recheck system operation. If system operates properly, original multi-display information center was defective. If system still does not operate properly, perform multi-display information center electrical harness pin voltage checks. See MULTI-DISPLAY INFORMATION CENTER under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. Check wiring harnesses and electrical connectors for an intermittent problem. Repair wiring harnesses or connectors as necessary. If voltage values, harnesses and connectors are okay, replace multi-display information center. After repairs have been made, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
