Test D: Malfunction In Fuel Receiver Gauge

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus ES 300 and 2002 Lexus ES 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check the combination meter assembly:
    • Check the voltage. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connectors still connected. Measure the voltage (5 volts) between terminals No. C7-22 and C7-28 of the combination meter assembly. See Fig 1 and Figure . Measure the voltage between terminals No. C7-8 and C7-22 of the combination meter assembly. See COMBINATION METER STANDARD VOLTAGE  table.
      COMBINATION METER STANDARD VOLTAGE

Fuel Level (Meter Scale) (1) Voltage (V)
      F 4.3-4.5
      E 0.5-0.7
      (1) As the fuel level is moved from the F side to the E side, the voltage decreases gradually without interruption.
    • If the voltage is OK, go to the next step. If the voltage is not OK, check and replace the combination meter assembly. See COMBINATION METER SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Inspect the fuel sender gauge assembly:
    • Check the fuel sender gauge voltage. Remove the fuel sender gauge assembly. Connect the positive (+) lead from the three 1.5 volts dry cell batteries to terminal No. 1 (FV) and negative (-) lead to terminal No. 3 (FE). For connector view, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Measure the voltage between terminals No. 1 (FR) and 3 (FE) of the fuel sender gauge assembly for each float position. See FUEL SENDER GAUGE STANDARD VOLTAGE  table. See Fig 2.
      FUEL SENDER GAUGE STANDARD VOLTAGE

Float Level Float Position mm (In.) Voltage (V)
      F 70.4-76.4 (2.77-3.01) 4.5-4.7
      1/2 9.9-15.9 (0.39-0.63) 2.2-2.6
      E 48.3-54.3 (1.9-2.14) 0.2-0.4
    • If the voltage is OK, repair or replace the harness or connector. If the voltage is not OK, replace fuel sender gauge assembly.
