Combination Meter Safety Pad Sub-Assembly: Removal

- On vehicles with a CD changer, perform ship mode setting. Take out all of the CDs (if they cannot be taken out, do not attempt to take them out forcibly and send the unit for repair). While simultaneously pressing the SEEK UP and DISC switches, turn the ignition switch to ACC. When the ship mode has been set, SHIP must be displayed. See Fig 1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Connecting the battery negative terminal automatically finishes the ship mode.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
- Remove the lower steering wheel cover No. 2.
- Remove the connector cover by using a screwdriver to disengage the 3 claws. See Fig 2. Remove the steering pad switch by removing the 2 screws and disconnecting the connector. See Fig 3.
- Remove the horn button assembly. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION of DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. For installation, see step 6 and 7 .
- Remove the steering wheel assembly. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering wheel main shaft assembly. See Fig 4. Using the Puller C Set, remove the steering wheel assembly. See SPECIAL TOOLS . For installation, see steps 3, 4 and 5 .
- Remove the left hand front door scuff plate by disengaging the tape, 3 clips, 7 claws. See Fig 5.
- Remove the right hand front door scuff plate.
- Remove the upper combination meter sub-assembly. Disconnect the hood lock control cable. Remove bolt B and screw I or J. See Fig 6. Disengage the 3 clips, claw and remove the upper combination meter sub-assembly then disconnect the connectors. See Fig 7.
- Remove the left hand lower combination meter insert sub-assembly. Remove the 4 B bolts. See Fig 6. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the left hand lower combination meter sub-assembly. See Fig 8.
- Remove the lower steering column cover No. 2. See Fig 9.
- Remove the steering column cover by removing the 3 screws. See Fig 10.
- Remove the headlamp dimmer switch assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
- Remove the windshield wiper switch assembly. See appropriate WIPER/WASHER SYSTEMS article.
- Remove the combination meter register assembly No. 1. Using a screwdriver, lever up the 2 claws on the combination meter safety pad sub-assembly from inside of the registers. See Fig 11. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the combination meter register assembly No. 1.
- Remove the combination meter register assembly No. 3.
- Remove the combination meter finish panel sub-assembly. Remove the 2 clips. See Fig 12. Disengage the 2 clips and remove the combination meter finish panel sub-assembly.
- Remove the combination meter assembly. Remove the 4 G or H screws. See Fig 6 and Fig 13 . Pull out the combination meter assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the combination meter under cover sub-assembly No. 1. Disengage the 3 claws and disconnect the connector. See Fig 14. Disengage the pin and remove the combination meter under cover sub-assembly No. 1.
- Remove the lower combination meter sub-assembly. Remove the 3 H screws and 2 B bolts. See Fig 6 and Fig 15 . Disengage the clip and remove the lower combination meter sub-assembly.
- Remove the upper console panel sub-assembly. Disengage the 4 clips. See Fig 16. Pull out the console panel sub-assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the upper rear console panel. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 6 clips and 2 claws. See Fig 17. Remove the console upper rear with the upper front console panel.
- Remove the console box carpet.
- Remove the rear console box. Remove the 2 C or D bolts and 2 G screws. See Fig 6 and Fig 18 . Disengage the 2 claws and remove the rear console box assembly, then disconnect the connector.
- Remove the left hand end combination meter finish panel. Remove the I or J screw. See Fig 6 and Fig 19 . Disengage the 2 clips and remove the left hand end combination meter.
- Remove the right hand end combination meter finish panel.
- Remove the air conditioning control assembly. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 5 clips and 3 claws. See Fig 20. Pull out the air conditioner control assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
- On vehicles with the Lexus navigation system, remove the combination meter finish panel sub-assembly center. Remove the 4 bolts. See Fig 21. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the combination meter finish panel sub-assembly center with the radio receiver assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
- On vehicles without the Lexus navigation system, remove the radio receiver panel. Remove the 4 bolts. See Fig 22. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips, 3 claws and remove the radio receiver panel with the radio receiver assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
- On vehicles with a CD changer, perform ship mode confirmation. See the back side of the radio receiver assembly and check that the window provided for mode checking is red. See Fig 23. If it is not red, perform the ship mode setting again; see step 1.
- Remove the left hand front pillar garnish. Remove a part of the left hand front door opening weather strip. Strongly press the positions where the special clips are used and release the clips. See Fig 24. Disengage the 2 clips and 2 claws, pull the left hand front pillar garnish backwards of the vehicle and remove. Remove the clip that is not reusable. For installation, see step 2.
- Remove the right hand front pillar garnish.
- Remove the combination meter finish plate.
- Disconnect the passenger air bag connector. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
- Using a screwdriver, remove the combination meter safety pad cap. See Fig 25.
- Remove the combination meter safety pad sub-assembly. Remove the 2 A and E bolts, the 2 F and G screws and the K nut. See Fig 6 and Fig 26 . Disconnect the connectors. Disengage the 2 pins and remove the combination meter safety pad sub-assembly. For installation, see step 1.
- Remove the combination meter moulding No. 2. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 6 claws and remove the combination meter moulding No. 2. See Fig 27.
- Remove the switch hole base No. 1 by disengaging the 4 claws.
- Remove the glove box lamp assembly by disengaging the 2 claws.
- Using a screwdriver, remove the automatic light control sensor. See Fig 28.
- Remove the side defroster nozzle duct No. 2 by removing a G screw.
- Remove the side defroster nozzle duct No. 1 by removing a G screw.
- Remove the defroster nozzle assembly, by removing 5 G screws.
- Remove the heater to register duct No. 2 by removing 2 G screws.
- Remove the heater to register duct No. 1 by removing 2 G screws.
- Remove the heater to register duct No. 3 by removing 2 G screws.
- Remove the defroster nozzle garnish No. 1.
- Remove the side defroster nozzle No. 1 by disengaging the claw.
- Remove the side defroster nozzle No. 2 by disengaging the claw.
- Remove the combination meter pin No. 1 by removing 2 G screws.
- Remove the combination meter passenger L/door air bag assembly. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION of PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
