Removal (4Runner)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 Toyota Tundra, 2003 Toyota Tacoma, 2003 Toyota Sienna, 2003 Toyota Sequoia, and 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  2. Remove first row driver and passenger rear seats.
  3. Remove necessary carpet.
  4. Remove 3 screws from service hole cover. See Fig 1
  5. Disconnect 2 electrical connectors from fuel pump. These are the electrical connectors for the fuel pump and vapor pressure sensor.
  6. Disconnect fuel tank filler pipe hose from fuel tank.
  7. Drain gasoline into approved container.
  8. Fuel tank must be removed for servicing fuel pump. Raise and support vehicle. See Fig 2.
  9. Support fuel tank protector with transmission jack. Remove 6 bolts to remove fuel tank protector.
  10. Disconnect fuel tank main tube and fuel tank return tube. Pinch tab on fuel tube to remove lock claw and pull out fuel tank tube. See Fig 3.
  11. Disconnect fuel tank breather tube. Pinch tab on fuel tube to remove lock claw and pull out fuel tank breather tube.
  12. Disconnect fuel tank breather tube from fuel tank. Push in connector at fuel tank. While pushing, pinch in around connector at fuel tank and pull out connector. See Fig 4.
  13. Support fuel tank with transmission jack. Remove 2 bolts and 2 fuel tank bands and remove fuel tank.
  14. Remove fuel tank insulator cushions. See Fig 5.
  15. Remove fuel tank main tube and fuel tank return tube retaining clips and pull out tubes.
  16. Unscrew fuel pump retainer to remove.
  17. Remove fuel pump assembly and gasket from fuel tank. Use care not to damage fuel filter on bottom of fuel pump and fuel gage sending unite when removing fuel pump.
