Removal (Tacoma & Tundra 3.4L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2003 Toyota Tundra, 2003 Toyota Tacoma, 2003 Toyota Sienna, 2003 Toyota Sequoia, and 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Air intake chamber, intake air connector and intake manifold must be removed for access to knock sensors. Knock sensors are located on cylinder block, just below cylinder heads. See Figure.
  2. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  under FUEL SYSTEMS.
  3. Drain cooling system.
  4. Remove air cleaner hose.
  5. Remove necessary components for removal of upper timing belt cover. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket.
  6. Remove bolts and air intake chamber support brace. See Figure.
  7. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses for removal of air intake chamber with throttle body. See Figure.
  8. Remove bolts/nuts, air intake chamber and gasket.
  9. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, ground straps, fuel hoses, vacuum hoses and wiring brackets for removal of intake air connector. See Figure.
  10. Remove bolts/nuts, fuel hose, vacuum hose from intake air connector and gasket.
  11. Remove fuel inlet pipe-to-intake manifold clamp bolt.
  12. Remove fuel inlet pipe-to-fuel rail union bolt with gaskets, and disconnect fuel inlet pipe from rear of fuel rail.
  13. Disconnect hoses at fuel pressure regulator. Remove bolts and fuel pressure regulator with "O" ring from fuel rail.
  14. Note location of electrical connectors on fuel injectors for installation reference. Disconnect electrical connectors at fuel injectors.
  15. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors for removal of intake manifold.
  16. Remove bolts and intake manifold support brace. See Figure
  17. Remove bolts/nuts and intake manifold with fuel injectors and fuel rails as an assembly. Remove gaskets for intake manifold.
  18. Disconnect electrical connector at knock sensors.
  19. Remove bolts/nuts and coolant by-pass pipe from top of cylinder block for access to knock sensors.
  20. Using Backup Light Switch Socket (SST 09817-16011), or equivalent, remove knock sensors from cylinder block.
