Park/Neutral Position Switch: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2003 Toyota Tacoma, 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2003 Toyota Prius, 2003 Toyota Matrix, and 2003 Toyota MR2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Using NEW lock plate, install PNP switch on transaxle. Install and tighten PNP switch retaining nut and PNP switch retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Bend over tab on lock plate against PNP switch retaining nut to lock in place.
  3. Reinstall control lever, washer and nut on PNP switch. See Fig 1. Tighten nut for control lever to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Reconnect shift cable on control lever.
  5. Check that engine starts only with shift lever in Park and Neutral. If PNP switch adjustment is required, go to next step.
  6. Ensure parking brake is applied. Place shift lever in Neutral. It may be necessary to remove control lever for access to PNP switch retaining bolts. Loosen PNP switch retaining bolts.
  7. Rotate PNP switch so neutral base line aligns with the groove. See Fig 1-Fig 4 . Tighten PNP switch retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Ensure continuity exists between specified terminals on PNP switch in relation to shift lever position. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER article.
  9. Reinstall electrical connector.

  1. Using NEW lock plate, install PNP switch on transmission.
  2. Install and tighten PNP switch retaining nut and PNP switch retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bend over tab on lock plate against PNP switching retaining nut.
  3. Using NEW "O" ring, install transmission oil cooler line elbow (if removed) and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install transmission oil cooler line (if removed) and tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Check that engine starts only with shift lever in Park and Neutral. If PNP switch adjustment is required, go to next step.
  6. Ensure parking brake is applied. Place shift lever in Neutral. Loosen PNP switch retaining bolt. Rotate PNP switch so neutral base line aligns with the groove. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Tighten PNP switch retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Ensure continuity exists between specified terminals on PNP switch in relation to shift lever position. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER article.
  8. Reinstall electrical connector.
