Diagnosis & Repair
Using Toyota hand-held tester or scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data. Freeze frame data records engine conditions when malfunction is detected.
For diagnosis and repair procedure, see Fig 1.
If oscilloscope is available, camshaft position sensor operation may be checked by reading camshaft position sensor waveform pattern with engine idling. This may be done by monitoring the camshaft position sensor signal which may be referred to as the G2 signal. Camshaft position sensor waveform pattern may be checked by connecting oscilloscope between ECM 24-pin connector E7 terminals No. 15 (G2+) (Red wire) and No. 24 (NE-) (Green wire). Camshaft position sensor waveform patterns should be properly displayed as shown in illustration. See Figure.
For Camshaft position sensor circuit wiring diagram, see Figure. Camshaft position sensor is located on cylinder head, just in front of intake manifold. For CMP sensor connector view, see Fig 2. When access to, or replacement of ECM is necessary, Engine Control Module (ECM) is located behind glove box. See Figure. For ECM connector terminal view, see Figure. For testing of systems or components, see BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 4-CYLINDER article or SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER article. When inspection and/or replacement of camshaft and camshaft position sensor signal plate on intake camshaft is necessary, see appropriate ENGINES article. For removal and installation of components, see REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - 4-CYLINDER article.
