Diagnosis & Repair
Using Toyota hand-held tester or scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data. Freeze frame data records engine conditions when malfunction is detected.
For diagnosis and repair procedure, see Fig 1.
If oscilloscope is available, crankshaft position sensor operation may be checked by reading crankshaft position sensor waveform pattern with engine idling. This may be done by monitoring the crankshaft position sensor signal which may be referred to as the NE signal. Crankshaft position sensor waveform pattern may be checked by connecting oscilloscope between ECM 24-pin connector E7 terminals No. 16 (NE+) (Blue wire) and No. 24 (NE-) (Green wire). Crankshaft position sensor waveform pattern should be properly displayed as shown in illustration. . See Fig 2.
Crankshaft position sensor is located near crankshaft pulley, just above oil pan on driver's side of engine. See Fig 3. For crankshaft position sensor circuit wiring diagram, see Fig 4. When access to, or replacement of ECM is necessary, Engine Control Module (ECM) is located behind glove box. See Figure. For ECM connector terminal view, see Figure. For testing of systems or components, see BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 4-CYLINDER article or SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER article.
