Diagnosis & Repair

Using Toyota hand-held tester or scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data. Freeze frame data records engine conditions when malfunction is detected.

For diagnosis and repair procedure, see Fig 1 & Fig 2 .

Normal mode vibration frequency of knock sensor is 6.6 kHz. If oscilloscope is available, knock sensor operation may be checked by reading knock sensor waveform patterns with engine at 4000 RPM. Knock sensor waveform patterns may be checked by connecting oscilloscope between body ground and ECM 31-pin connector E8 terminal No. 28 (Black wire). Knock sensor waveform patterns should be properly displayed. See Fig 3.

When access to, or replacement of ECM is necessary, Engine Control Module (ECM) is located behind glove box. See Figure. For ECM connector terminal view, see Figure.
