Diagnosis & Repair

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus SC 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3, E4 and E5 ECM connectors. Connect terminal HTL to bank 1 sensor 1. Connect terminal HTR to bank 2 sensor 1. Connect terminal HTL2 to bank 1 sensor 2. Connect terminal HTR2 to bank 2 sensor 2. See Fig 1. See ECM E3, E4 & E5 CONNECTOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If voltage is to specification, check and replace ECM. If voltage is not to specification, go to next step.
    ECM E3, E4 & E5 CONNECTOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS

    Terminals No. Specification
    HTL (E3-9) - E1 (E3-7) 9-14 Volts
    HTR (E4-30) - E1 (E3-7) 9-14 Volts
    HTL2 (E5-7) - E1 (E3-7) 9-14 Volts
    HTR2 (E5-8) - E1 (E3-7) 9-14 Volts

  2. Disconnect the H9, H10, H15 and H16 heated oxygen sensor connectors. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the connector. For bank 1 sensor 1, and bank 2 sensor 1, measure voltage between terminals No. 1 and 4. For bank 1 sensor 2, and bank 2 sensor 2, measure voltage between terminals No. 2 and 3. See Fig 2. At 68°F (20°C), 11-16 ohms should be present. At 1472°F (800°C), 23-32 ohms should be present. If not to specification, replace heated oxygen sensor. If to specification, go to next step.

  3. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connectors. See Fig 3. Disconnect E3, E4 and E5 ECM connectors. See Fig 4. Check the continuity between the wire harness side connectors. See HO2S/ECM WIRING CONTINUITY CHECK  table. Check wire harness between the H9, H10, H15 and H16 heated oxygen sensor connectors and EFI relay. Inspect the EFI No. 2 fuse. Remove the EFI No. 2 fuse from the engine room No. 2 relay block. Check continuity of EFI No. 2 fuse. Remove EFI relay from engine room No. 2 relay block. Check continuity between wire harness side connectors. Check the wire harness between the H9, H10, H15 and H16 heated oxygen sensor connectors and body ground. Check the continuity between the wire harness side connectors. See HO2S/EFI RELAY WIRING CONTINUITY CHECK  table. Repair or replace wiring or connectors as necessary. If okay, check and replace ECM.
