Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect 10-pin solenoid connector located above PNP switch on side of transaxle. See Figure. Remove transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Disconnect all solenoid connectors at solenoids. See Figure. Remove transaxle wiring harness from transaxle. Submerge ATF temperature sensor in water.
  2. Heat water while measuring sensor resistance between solenoid connector terminals No. 1 and 6. At 77°F (25°C), resistance should be 3.5 k/ohms. At 231°F (110°C), resistance should be 231-263 ohms.
  3. If resistance is not as specified, replace ATF temperature sensor. Sensor is part of transaxle internal wiring harness. If resistance is as specified, check and repair wiring harness and connector between ATF temperature sensor and ECM. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM.
