Inspection Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2002 Toyota Camry, 2002 Lexus RX 300, and 2001 Toyota RAV4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Warm up the engine. Turn ignition off. Connect the scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn ignition and the scan tool on. Place the gearshift lever to the "R", "D", "2", and "L" positions. Select the REVERSE, 4th/DRIVE, 2ND and LOW in the DATA LIST and read its value displayed on the scan tool or hand-held tester. See Fig 1. If all parameters are within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, go to next step.
- Disconnect the PNP switch connector. Check for continuity between each terminal shown in figure, while moving gearshift lever to each position. See Diagnostic Procedure . If continuity is within specification, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (CAMRY, ES 300, HIGHLANDER & RAV4) .
- Connect the PNP switch connector. Disconnect the ECM connector. Turn ignition on and measure the voltage from terminal E1 to terminals "R", "D", "2" and "L" when the gearshift lever is moved through the specified positions. See Fig 2. If readings are within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, repair or replace wiring harness and connector.
