Removal (Corolla)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Remove battery and air cleaner case with air intake hose. Remove clutch release cylinder hydraulic line bracket. Remove clutch release cylinder with hydraulic line attached, and secure out of the way.
  2. Disconnect back-up light switch and vehicle speed sensor connectors. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle. Disconnect clips, washers and control cables from transaxle. Remove starter set bolt from transaxle. Remove upper transaxle mounting bolts. Install engine support brace. Remove left engine mount bolts and left engine mount. Remove left engine mounting support and bracket.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove lower engine covers. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove heat shields.
  4. Position a jack under front subframe and suspension arm crossmember. Remove front stabilizer bar. Remove 14 bolts and 3 nuts and remove suspension arm crossmember. See Figure. Remove starter.
  5. Remove 4 transaxle mounting bolts. Slightly lower left side of engine and remove transaxle. Place reference mark on clutch cover and flywheel for reassembly reference.
  6. Alternately loosen clutch cover bolts until spring tension is released. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc. Remove clutch release fork and clutch release bearing as an assembly from transaxle. See Figure. Disassemble clutch release fork and clutch release bearing.
