Removal (Celica 2.2L)
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Remove battery. Remove air cleaner case with air intake hose. On models equipped with cruise control, disconnect cruise control actuator connector. Remove 3 bolts and cruise control actuator with bracket. Remove starter. Remove clutch release cylinder with hose attached and secure aside.
- Disconnect back-up light switch and speed sensor connectors. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle. Remove bolt and engine wire clamp from transaxle. Remove clips washers and control cables from control lever housing support bracket. Remove 2 upper transaxle mounting bolts.
- Remove bolt and 2 nuts from left upper engine mount. Install engine support brace. Secure engine to support brace. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove lower engine covers. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate article in DRIVE AXLES.
- Remove and discard 3 front exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold flange nuts. Remove and discard gasket. Remove bolts and nuts at rear of front exhaust pipe. Remove and discard gasket. Remove bolts, nut and front exhaust pipe support bracket. Using a transmission jack, slightly raise transaxle to remove weight from engine mounts.
- Remove grommets and front (exhaust manifold side) engine mount through-bolt. Remove front (exhaust manifold side) engine mount-to-crossmember and engine mount-to-engine. Remove grommets and rear (intake manifold side) engine mount through-bolt. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember and engine mount-to-engine. Remove left lower engine mount bolt.
- Remove bolt, pipe bracket and center member. Remove stiffener plate. Support transaxle with a transmission jack and remove remaining transaxle mounting bolts. Slightly lower left side of engine and remove transaxle. Place reference marks on clutch cover and flywheel for reassembly reference.
- Alternately loosen clutch cover bolts one turn at a time until spring tension is released. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc. Remove clutch release fork and clutch release bearing as an assembly from transaxle (if necessary). See Figure. Disassemble clutch release fork and clutch release bearing (if necessary).
