Removal (Celica 1.8L)
- Place reference marks on hood and hood hinges for reassembly reference. With assistance, remove hood. Remove No. 2 cylinder head cover. Disconnect and remove radiator reservoir. Remove battery. Remove air cleaner case assembly with air hose and ECM box.
- Disconnect transaxle control cables. Disconnect ground cable. Disconnect speed sensor and back-up light switch connectors. Remove clutch release cylinder and clutch line bracket. Remove starter. Remove transaxle control cable bracket. Remove 2 transaxle upper side mounting bolts.
- Disconnect both PCV hoses. Install No. 1 Engine Hanger (12281-22021) with hook facing toward outside of vehicle. Install No. 2 Engine Hanger (12281-15040 or 12281-15050) with hook facing towards front of vehicle. Tighten hanger bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 N.m). Attach engine support to engine hangers.
- Raise engine enough to take weight off of engine mounts. Remove left engine mounting bracket through-bolt. Lower transaxle side of engine and remove left engine mounting bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine under covers.
- Remove front wheels. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate article in DRIVE AXLES. Disconnect both oxygen sensor connectors. Remove front exhaust pipe.
- Remove 4 power steering gear mounting bolts and support steering gear out of the way. Disconnect left and right stabilizer bar links from strut housing. Position transmission jack under front subframe and lower suspension arms. Remove subframe nuts and bolts in order indicated and remove subframe and lower suspension arms. See Fig 1. Remove rear engine mount and bracket.
- Using transmission jack raise transaxle slightly. Remove 4 transaxle lower side mounting bolts. Lower left side of engine and remove transaxle. Place reference marks on clutch cover and flywheel.
- Alternately loosen clutch cover bolts one turn at a time until spring tension is released. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc. Remove clutch release fork and clutch release bearing as an assembly from transaxle (if necessary). See Figure. Disassemble clutch release fork and clutch release bearing (if necessary).
CAUTION:
When supporting engine only use engine hangers. DO NOT attempt to support engine from any other component.
