Removal (Tundra)

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel. Remove brake drum. Using a dial indicator, measure backlash in bearing shaft direction. Maximum backlash is .028" (0.71 mm). If backlash exceeds maximum, replace bearing. Using a dial indicator, measure hub bearing out of round at surface of axle shaft outside hub bolt. Maximum out of round is .004" (.10 mm). If measurement exceeds maximum, replace axle shaft. See Figure.
  2. If equipped with ABS, remove bolt and ABS speed sensor from rear axle housing. On all models, remove rear brake assembly. Disconnect and plug brakeline at wheel cylinder. See Figure. Remove clip and pin, and disconnect parking brake cable.
  3. Remove 4 backing plate mounting nuts. Pull out rear axle shaft assembly from rear axle housing. Remove "O" ring from axle housing.
