Rear Axle Shaft & Bearing: Installation
- Apply grease to lip of inner oil seal. Install NEW inner oil seal into end of axle housing (if removed). Press NEW bearing into backing plate (if removed). Install NEW outer oil seal into backing plate (if removed).
- Apply grease to lip of outer oil seal. Install bearing with backing plate onto rear axle shaft. Using a press, install ABS speed sensor rotor and bearing retainer onto rear axle shaft. Install to a depth of 4.772-4.850" (121.2-123.2 mm) from hub face. See Fig 2.
- Ensure flat side of retainer faces toward bearing and beveled edge of retainer faces toward splined end of rear axle shaft. Using press, press rear axle shaft into backing plate. Install NEW snap ring onto rear axle shaft.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW "O" ring when installing backing plate. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bleed brake system. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in
BRAKES. Check for ABS speed sensor signal.

- Install NEW "O" ring to rear axle housing. Install rear axle shaft assembly. Connect parking brake cable with pin and clip. Connect brakeline to wheel cylinder. Install rear brake assembly.
- If equipped with ABS, install ABS sensor. Measure bearing backlash and axle shaft deviation. See step 1 under REMOVAL. Install NEW gasket and brake drum. Install rear wheel.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW "O" ring when installing backing plate. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bleed brake system. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in
BRAKES.
