Removal (Tacoma & 4Runner)
- Drain differential oil. On Tacoma, place reference marks on drive shaft companion flange and companion flange on differential for reassembly reference. Remove drive shaft companion flange bolts and nuts, and separate drive shaft from differential assembly. See DRIVE SHAFT . On 4Runner, remove drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT .
- Using hammer and chisel, loosen stake area on drive pinion nut. Remove drive pinion nut. Using puller, remove companion flange from drive pinion.
- Using puller, remove oil seal from differential carrier. Note direction of oil slinger for installation reference (if equipped). Remove oil slinger. Using puller, remove front bearing from drive pinion.
- Remove front bearing outer race and oil storage ring (if equipped). Remove and discard spacer from drive pinion.
NOTE:
Always replace spacer whenever drive pinion nut is loosened or removed.
