Fluid Level Check

WARNING: The reservoir tank may be hot so be careful not to burn yourself.
CAUTION: Avoid overfilling, or the power steering could be damaged.
  1. Keep vehicle level.
  2. NOTE: If the vehicle has been driven around 80 km/h (50 mph) for 20 minutes (a little more in frigid temperatures), the fluid is hot 140-175°F (60-80°C). You may also check the level when the fluid is cold, about room temperature, 50-85°F (10-30°C), if the engine has not been run for about 5 hours.

  3. Check the fluid level through the reservoir. Clean all dirt from outside of the reservoir tank and look at the fluid level. If the fluid is cold, the level should be in the COLD range. See Fig 1. Similarly, if it is hot, the fluid level should be in the HOT range. If the level is at the low side of either range, add automatic transmission fluid to bring the level within the range.
  4. To remove the filler cap, turn it counterclockwise and lift up. To reinstall it, turn it clockwise. After replacing the filler cap, visually check the steering box case, vane pump and hose connections for leaks or damage.
  5. Boost fluid temperature. Start the engine and run it at idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to boost the fluid temperature 176°F (80°C).
  6. Check for foaming or emulsification. See Figure. If there is foaming or emulsification, bleed the power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under LUBRICATION.
  7. Check fluid level rise. With the engine idling, measure the fluid level in the reservoir. Stop the engine. Wait a few minutes and measure the fluid level in the reservoir again. See Fig 2 and FLUID LEVEL RISE  . If a problem is found, bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under LUBRICATION.
  8. Check fluid level.
