Steering Gear: Removal

  1. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
  2. Remove steering wheel pad. See Removing Steering Wheel Pad .
  3. Disconnect the connector. Remove the steering wheel set nut. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly. Using the Puller C Set: Hanger 150, Slide Arm, Center Bolt 150 and Claw No. 2 (SST 09920-50010, 09551-05010, 09552-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020), remove the wheel. See Fig 1.

  4. Remove the cotter pin and remove the nut. Using the Ball Joint Puller (SST 09610-20012), separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. See Fig 2.

  5. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. See Fig 3. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B.

  6. Disconnect the clamp plate. Remove the nut.
  7. Disconnect the pressure feed and return tubes. Using the Power Steering Hose Nut 14 x 17 mm Wrench Set (SST 09631-22020), disconnect the tube. See Fig 4.

  8. CAUTION: Do not remove the bar.
  9. Disconnect the stabilizer bar. Remove the 4 bolts.
  10. Remove the No. 1 fuel tube protector. Remove 2 bolts and nut.
  11. CAUTION: Do not damage the turn pressure tubes.
  12. Remove the 2 gear assembly set bolts and nuts. Lift the stabilizer bar and remove the bolts. Remove the gear assembly from the left hand of the vehicle.
