Inspection & Replacement

CAUTION: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. Using a dial indicator, check the rack for runout and for teeth wear and damage. See Fig 1. See STEERING RACK RUNOUT . Check the back surface for wear and damage.

  2. CAUTION: Make sure you install the oil seal facing the correct direction.

  3. If necessary, replace the oil seal and bearing. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 26 and the Handle Set: Handle 200 (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00260, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press out the oil seal and bearing from the control valve housing. See Fig 2. Coat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 18, Replacer 32 and Adapter and the Handle Set: Handle (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00180, 09951-00320, 09952-06010, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press in the oil seal. See Fig 3. Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 18, Replacer 34 and Adapter and the Handle Set: Handle (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00180, 09951-00340, 09952-06010, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press in the bearing. See Fig 4.
  4. If necessary, replace 2 bearings. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap out the bearing from the rack housing. See Fig 5. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 26 and the Handle Set: Handle 200 (SST 09950-60010, 09950-00260, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press out the bearing from the rack housing. See Fig 6. Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 25, Replacer 31 and Adapter and the Handle Set: Handle 200 (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00250, 09951-00310, 09952-06010, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press in the bearing. See Fig 7. Coat a new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. Using the Steering Gear Box Replacer Set: Steering Sector Shaft Bushing Replacer and Handle (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00320, 09950-70010, 09951-07200), press in the bearing. See Fig 8.

  5. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the bushing.Make sure you install the oil seal facing the correct direction.

  6. If necessary, replace the oil seal. Using the Rear Axle Shaft Bearing Remover and the Steering Gear Housing Overhaul Tool Set: Steering Rack Shaft Bushing Puller (SST 09527-20011, 09612-24014, 09613-22011), remove the oil seal from the bushing. See Fig 9. Coat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 24, Replacer 40 and Adapter (SST 09950-60010, 09951-00240, 09951-00400, 09952-06010), press in the oil seal. See Fig 10.
  7. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the groove for the teflon ring or overexpand the new teflon ring.

  8. If necessary, replace the teflon ring and O-ring from the steering rack. See Fig 11. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it. Expand a new teflon ring with your fingers. See Fig 12. Coat the ring with power steering fluid. Install the ring to the steering rack, and snug it down with your fingers. See Fig 13.
  9. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the grooves for the teflon rings, overexpand the new teflon rings or damage the rings.
  10. If necessary, replace the teflon rings. Using a screwdriver, remove 4 rings from the control valve assembly. See Fig 14. Expand 4 new teflon rings with your fingers. Coat the rings with power steering fluid. Install the rings to the control valve assembly, and snug them down with your fingers. Carefully slide the tapered end of the Seal Ring Tool (SST 09631-20081) over the rings to seat them. See Fig 15.
