Power Steering Pump: Inspection

  1. Measure the oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bushing. Using a micrometer and caliper gauge, measure the oil clearance. See Fig 1. See OIL CLEARANCE . If it is more than maximum, replace the front housing and vane pump shaft.

  2. Inspect the vane pump rotor and vane plates. Using a micrometer, measure height, thickness and length of the 10 plates. See Fig 2. See VANE PLATE MEASUREMENTS .

  3. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the rotor groove and plate. See Fig 3. See ROTOR GROOVE & PLATE CLEARANCE . If more than maximum, replace the plate and/or rotor with one having the same mark stamped on the cam ring (inscribed mark: 1, 2, 3, 4 or None). There are 5 vane lengths with the following rotor and cam ring marks. See Fig 4. See VANE LENGTHS .

  4. Inspect the flow control valve. Coat the valve with power steering fluid and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. See Fig 5. Check the valve for leakage. Close one of the holes and apply 57-71 psi (392-490 kPa, 4-5 kg/cm2 ) of compressed air into the opposite side, and confirm that air does not come out from the end holes. See Fig 6. If necessary, replace the valve with one having the same letter as inscribed on the front housing (mark: A, B, C, D, E or F). See Fig 7.

  5. Inspect the spring. Using calipers, measure the free length of the spring. See Fig 8. See SPRING FREE LENGTH . If it is not within the specification, replace the spring.

  6. CAUTION: Make sure not to damage the front housing. Make sure you install the oil seal facing the correct direction.

  7. If necessary replace the oil seal. Using a screwdriver with vinyl tape wound around the tip, remove the oil seal. See Fig 9. Coat a new oil seal lip with power steering fluid. Using the Replacer Set: Replacer 33 and the Handle Set: Handle 100 (SST 09950-60010, 09951-0030, 09950-70010, 09951-07100), press in the oil seal. See Fig 10.
