Removal (Tacoma, T100 & 4Runner)
- Air intake chamber, intake air connector and intake manifold must be removed for access to knock sensors. Knock sensors are located on cylinder block, just below the cylinder heads. See Figure-5.
- Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE under FUEL SYSTEM. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner hose. Remove necessary components for removal of upper timing belt cover. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket.
- Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, control cables, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses for removal of air intake chamber with throttle body. See Figure. On models with EGR, remove nuts, EGR pipe and gaskets. On all models, remove bolts/nuts, air intake chamber and gasket.
- Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, ground straps, vacuum hoses and wiring brackets for removal of intake air connector. See Figure. Remove bolts/nuts, intake air connector and gasket.
- Remove fuel inlet pipe-to-fuel rail union bolt with gaskets, and disconnect fuel inlet pipe from rear of fuel rail. Disconnect vacuum hose and fuel return hose from fuel pressure regulator. Remove bolts and fuel pressure regulator with "O" ring from fuel rail.
- Remove bolts and ignition coils with spark plug wires if necessary for removal of intake air connector and intake manifold. Note location of electrical connectors on fuel injectors for installation reference. Disconnect electrical connectors at fuel injectors. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors for removal of intake manifold.
- Remove bolts and intake manifold support brace at driver's side front corner of intake manifold. Remove bolts/nuts and intake manifold with fuel injectors and fuel rails as an assembly. Remove gaskets for intake manifold.
- Disconnect electrical connector at the knock sensors. Remove bolts/nuts and coolant by-pass pipe from top of cylinder block for access to knock sensors. Using Socket (SST 09817-16011), remove knock sensor(s) from cylinder block.
