DTC B2798: Communication Malfunction No. 2

NOTE: DTC B2798 may be caused by defective ignition key, transponder key coil, transponder key amplifier, wiring or ECM.

  1. Check Transponder Key Coil

Check transponder key coil operation. See TRANSPONDER KEY COIL  under COMPONENT TESTS. If transponder key coil is okay, go to next step. If transponder key coil is defective, replace transponder key coil.
  2. Check Transponder Key Amplifier Wiring

Check for defective connectors and wiring between transponder key amplifier and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Transponder key amplifier is located near upper steering column bracket and ECM is located behind glove box. See Figure. If connectors and wiring are okay, go to next step. If connectors or wiring are defective, repair as necessary.
  3. Replace Transponder Key Amplifier

Replace transponder key amplifier. See TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check system operation. If system operates normally after replacing original transponder key amplifier, no further testing is required at this time, as the original transponder key amplifier was defective. If system still does not operate normally after replacing original transponder key amplifier, go to next step.
  4. Replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure ignition keys are registered to the ECM. See IGNITION KEY REGISTRATION  under PROGRAMMING.
