Wheel Bearing Inspection

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and brake caliper. Place reference mark on disc rotor and axle hub for reassembly reference.
  2. Remove disc rotor. Place dial indicator on backing plate with stem resting on face of axle hub. Check in and out movement (axial play) of axle hub. Replace wheel bearing if axial play exceeds .002" (.05 mm).
  3. When installing brake caliper and wheel, tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Ensure reference mark on disc rotor and axle hub are aligned.
