Ball Joint Checking

  1. To check upper ball joint, disconnect upper ball joint from axle carrier. Move ball joint stud back and forth 5 times. Install nut on ball joint stud.
  2. Use an INCH-lb. torque wrench to check ball joint turning torque required to rotate ball joint stud. Rotate ball joint stud nut one turn every 2-4 seconds, and note ball joint turning torque on fifth revolution.
  3. Ball joint turning torque should be 9-30 INCH lbs. (1.0-3.4 N.m). Replace upper suspension arm if ball joint turning torque is not within specification.
NOTE: Upper suspension arm and upper ball joint must be replace as a unit if upper ball joint is defective.
