Removal & Installation: Installation

  1. Install No. 1 idler pulley as far to the left as possible (away from timing belt), and temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Align timing marks on camshaft sprockets with timing mark on No. 4 timing belt cover. See Fig 1. Install timing belt.
  2. Loosen No. 1 idler pulley retaining bolt. Pry No. 1 idler pulley as far to the right as possible (toward timing belt), and temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Install tension spring. Loosen No. 1 idler pulley retaining bolt until idler pulley moves with spring force of tension spring.
  3. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley retaining bolt. Using crankshaft pulley retaining bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise (viewed from front of engine) 2 full revolutions.
  4. CAUTION: Always rotate crankshaft clockwise. DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise.
  5. Ensure all timing marks are properly aligned. See Fig 1. Tighten No. 1 idler pulley retaining bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 N.m). Check timing belt deflection.
  6. To remove slack in timing belt, rotate intake and exhaust camshaft timing pulleys inward by applying a turning torque of 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). See Fig 2.
  7. Remove crankshaft pulley retaining bolt. Install timing belt guide with cupped side toward front of engine.
  8. CAUTION: Ensure timing belt guide is installed with cupped side toward front of engine and flat side against crankshaft sprocket.
  9. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Apply sealant to coolant outlet before installing. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust drive belts to proper tension.
