Timing Belt: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system, and remove radiator.
  2. Remove spark plugs. Remove thermostat housing, thermostat and gasket. Remove accessory drive belts, fan and water pump pulley. Remove No. 3 timing belt cover and gasket. See Fig 1.

  3. Rotate crankshaft so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
  4. Ensure timing marks on camshaft timing pulleys align with timing marks on No. 2 timing belt cover. See Fig 2. If conditions are not as described, rotate crankshaft one complete revolution.
CAUTION: If reusing timing belt, place arrow on timing belt to indicate direction of rotation.
  5. Loosen idler pulley retaining bolt. Pry idler pulley as far left (away from timing belt) as possible, and tighten retaining bolt. Remove timing belt from camshaft timing pulleys. Support timing belt so it does not disengage from crankshaft timing pulley.
  6. Using Pulley Holder (SST 09213-54015 for Cressida or SST 09213-70010 for Supra) and Handle (SST 09330-00021), hold crankshaft pulley and remove retaining bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley.
  7. Remove air tube from power steering unit. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached, and secure aside. Remove A/C idler pulley bracket, A/C compressor bracket and No. 1 timing belt cover. Remove timing belt. Remove idler pulley and tension spring (if necessary).
  8. If removing camshaft timing pulleys, hold camshaft timing pulley with Pulley Holder (SST 09278-54012) and remove retaining bolt. Place reference mark on camshaft timing pulley where dowel pin is installed for reassembly reference. Remove camshaft timing pulley and dowel pin.
CAUTION: After removing camshaft timing pulley retaining bolt and washer, note location of dowel pin in dowel pin holes for reassembly reference. See Fig 2.
  9. If removing crankshaft timing pulley, use Puller (SST 09213-60017) and remove crankshaft timing pulley. If removing oil pump drive pulley, remove retaining bolt and oil pump drive pulley.
