Timing Belt: Installation
- Install oil pump drive pulley (if removed), and tighten bolt to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Using Pulley Installer (SST 09214-60010), drive crankshaft timing pulley onto crankshaft (if removed). Install idler pulley, tension spring and retaining bolt (if removed).
- Pry idler pulley as far left (away from timing belt) as possible, and tighten retaining bolt. Install timing belt on crankshaft timing pulley, oil pump drive pulley and idler pulley.CAUTION: If installing used timing belt, ensure timing belt is installed in original direction of rotation.
- Install No. 1 timing belt cover, A/C compressor bracket, A/C idler pulley bracket and A/C compressor. Install air tube on power steering unit.
- Install key in crankshaft (if removed). Install crankshaft pulley and bolt. Using pulley holder, hold crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Rotate crankshaft so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
- Align timing marks on camshaft timing pulleys with timing marks on No. 2 timing belt cover, and install pulleys. See Figure. Install dowel pin.NOTE: When replacing camshaft or camshaft timing pulley, install dowel pin in middle dowel pin hole. When using original components, install dowel pin in original location.CAUTION: Use pulley holder to hold camshaft timing pulley when tightening bolt. DO NOT use timing belt tension to hold camshaft timing pulley.
- Install camshaft timing pulley bolt and washer. Using pulley holder, hold camshaft timing pulley and tighten bolt to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Ensure timing marks on camshaft timing pulleys and No. 2 timing belt cover are still aligned. Install timing belt in following order: on intake camshaft timing pulley, on exhaust camshaft timing pulley and then on idler pulley.NOTE: Ensure tension exists on timing belt between crankshaft timing pulley and intake camshaft timing pulley.
- Loosen idler pulley bolt until idler pulley moves with spring force of tension spring. Tighten idler pulley bolt to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.CAUTION: Always rotate crankshaft clockwise. DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise.
- Ensure equal pressure exists on timing belt at points "A" and "B". See Fig 1 (STEP 1). Rotate crankshaft 2 full revolutions clockwise (viewed from front of engine).
- Ensure timing marks on camshaft timing pulleys and No. 2 timing belt cover are aligned. If timing marks are not aligned, remove timing belt, align camshaft timing pulley timing marks and reinstall timing belt.
- Check timing belt deflection. To remove slack in timing belt, rotate intake and exhaust camshaft timing pulleys inward by applying a turning torque of 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). See Fig 1 (STEP 2).
- Measure timing belt deflection at designated area. See Fig 1 (STEP 3). Timing belt deflection should be within specification. See TIMING BELT DEFLECTION SPECIFICATIONS table. If timing belt deflection is not within specification, adjust idler pulley.CAUTION: Ensure thermostat is installed with jiggle pin upward (toward top of engine).
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See appropriate TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fill cooling system.
