Oil Pump Drive Shaft: Removal

  1. Remove timing belt and oil pump drive pulley. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove timing belt case. See TIMING BELT CASE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Removing oil pump may be necessary, as drive gear on oil pump engages with oil pump drive shaft. See OIL PUMP under ENGINE OILING. Remove retaining bolt and oil pump drive shaft.
  3. Using feeler gauge, measure oil pump drive shaft thrust clearance between thrust plate and collar. See Figure. Standard thrust clearance is .0024-.0051" (.061-.130 mm). If thrust clearance exceeds .0118" (.300 mm), replace thrust plate and/or collar.
  4. To remove thrust plate, place Thrust Plate Puller (SST 09950-20017) in vise. Install oil pump drive shaft in puller. Pull off thrust plate and collar. See Figure and Figure .
