Timing Belt: Removal
- Drain cooling system. Remove fan shroud. Disconnect radiator and coolant reservoir hoses. Disconnect transmission cooler lines (if equipped). Remove radiator retaining bolts and radiator.
- Remove spark plugs. Remove thermostat housing, thermostat and gasket. Remove A/C belt. Remove radiator fan and water pump pulley. Remove power steering and alternator drive belts. Remove No. 3 timing belt cover and gasket. See Fig 1.
- Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure "0" on No. 1 timing belt cover timing mark plate is aligned with pulley groove. Alignment marks on camshaft pulleys must be aligned with marks on No. 2 timing belt cover (cover behind pulleys). See Fig 2. If timing belt is to be reused, place arrow on belt in direction of rotation.
- Loosen idler pulley bolt. Pry the idler pulley as far left as it will go and tighten pulley bolt. Relieve timing belt tension and remove belt from camshaft and idler pulleys. Support belt in such a way that alignment marks on camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulley are not disturbed.
- Using Camshaft Pulley Holder (09278-54012), hold pulley and remove bolt. Remove camshaft pulleys and dowel pins (center pin only on each pulley). Using Crankshaft Pulley Adapter and Bar (09213-70010 and 09330-00021), hold pulley and remove bolt. Using Crankshaft Pulley Puller (09213-31021), remove crankshaft pulley.NOTE: DO NOT use belt tension to hold camshaft pulley while removing bolt.
- Remove air tube from power steering unit. Remove A/C compressor without disconnecting hoses. Remove A/C idler pulley bracket, A/C compressor bracket and No. 1 timing belt cover. Remove timing belt. Remove idler pulley and spring.
- Using Crankshaft Timing Pulley Puller (09213-60017) and socket, remove crankshaft timing pulley. Using Oil Pump Drive Pulley Holder (09278-54012), remove oil pump drive pulley.
