Timing Belt: Installation

  1. Install oil pump drive pulley. Using oil pump drive pulley holder, install and tighten pulley belt. Using Crankshaft Timing Pulley Installer (09214-60010), drive pulley onto crankshaft. Install idler pulley and spring. Pry the idler pulley as far left as it will go and tighten pulley bolt. Keep idler pulley clean.
  2. With engine cold, install timing belt on crankshaft, oil pump drive and idler pulleys. If reusing old belt, install belt with arrow pointing in direction of rotation. Install No. 1 timing belt cover, A/C compressor bracket and idler pulley bracket. Install A/C compressor. Install air tube on power steering unit.
  3. Align Woodruff key and install crankshaft pulley. Using crankshaft pulley adapter and bar, hold pulley and tighten bolt. Turn crankshaft pulley to align "0" on No. 1 timing belt cover timing mark plate with crankshaft pulley groove.
  4. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with marks on No. 2 timing belt cover and install pulleys. See Figure. Install dowel pin in middle hole of each pulley. Install bolt. Using camshaft pulley holder, hold pulley and tighten bolt. Ensure camshaft pulley marks are still aligned.
  5. Install timing belt. Loosen idler pulley bolt and allow tensioner to re position. Tighten idler pulley bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 N.m). Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 revolutions clockwise (TDC to TDC). Ensure camshaft timing marks are aligned with marks on timing cover No. 2.
  6. If timing marks DO NOT  align, remove timing belt. Align camshaft timing marks and install timing belt. Ensure timing belt deflection (stretch) is within specification.
  7. To check timing belt deflection, remove slack in timing belt by rotating both intake and exhaust camshaft pulleys inward. Measure timing belt deflection at center of timing belt between intake and exhaust cams. If measurement is not within specification, readjust belt tension. See TIMING BELT DEFLECTION SPECIFICATIONS  table. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
