Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove turbocharger (if equipped). Remove exhaust manifold as previously outlined.
  2. Remove union bolts and coolant by-pass hose with gaskets at coolant outlet housing. Disconnect coolant by-pass hose from coolant by-pass tube. Remove bolt, nuts, coolant outlet housing and gasket.
  3. Remove accelerator link. Remove No. 1 and No. 2 valve covers. Using Clamp Adapter (09923-00010), remove heater hose clamp and No. 3 valve cover (cover between camshafts). Remove spark plugs.
  4. Using 10 mm Hex Adapter (09043-38100), loosen cylinder head bolts in 3 stages in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Fig 1. Cylinder head bolts must be removed in correct order to prevent warpage or cracking. Lift cylinder head off dowels on engine block.

  5. While lifting head, separate coolant by-pass hose from union. Place head on wooden blocks on work bench.
NOTE: Cylinder head can be pried from engine block with pry bar inserted between head and block projections only. DO NOT  damage head or block surfaces during prying operation.
