Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Clean camshaft. Measure runout. Mount dial indicator so tip is touching center journal. If runout exceeds limit, replace camshaft. Measure camshaft lobe height. If lobe height is less than minimum limit, replace camshaft. See CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. Using a micrometer, measure camshaft journal diameter. If journal diameter is less than specified, replace camshaft. Clean camshaft bearing caps. Using Plastigage method, install camshaft in cylinder head to measure camshaft oil clearance.
  3. Install bearing caps with top of number (stamped in cap) facing front of head in numerical sequence. Tighten bearing cap bolts in 3 stages in tightening sequence. See Figure and TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. If maximum oil clearance is exceeded, replace cylinder head and/or camshaft.
  4. Clean camshaft and install bearing caps. Using a dial indicator, measure camshaft end play. If end play is not within specification, replace cylinder head and/or camshaft. See CAMSHAFT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
