Rod Bearings Service
- Note connecting rod and cap direction before disassembly. Ensure bearing oil clearance and side play are within specification. If clearance exceeds maximum limit, replace bearings and/or grind crankshaft journals. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS SPECIFICATIONS table.NOTE: Five different standard connecting rod bearings are available. Each bearing is identified by a "1", "2", "3", "4" or "5" mark. Always replace bearings with those having the same number.
- Crankshaft rod bearing journal size is indicated by a number, located on crankshaft counterweight and connecting rod bearing cap. See Fig 1.
- Ensure rod bearing journal is within specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS SPECIFICATIONS table. If rod bearing number is unreadable, add number on crankshaft counterweight and number on connecting rod cap to determine proper rod bearing to be used.
- See corresponding number in ROD BEARING SPECIFICATIONS table. Rod bearings are available in .010" (.25 mm) undersize. Tighten connecting rod bearing cap nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
NOTE:
Install rod bearings with oil hole in the connecting rod.
