Piston Pin Service

  1. Check fit between piston and pin by moving piston back and forth on piston pin. If any movement is felt, replace piston and pin.
  2. To separate piston from connecting rod, remove snap rings from piston with needle-nose pliers. Heat piston and rod assembly to 140°F (60°C). Drive pin out of piston with plastic-faced hammer and driver.
    NOTE: Piston and pin are a matched set. Keep piston, pin, rings and connecting rod together for each cylinder.
  3. Measure clearance between connecting rod bushing and piston pin. Standard clearance is .0002-.0004" (.005-.010 mm). If maximum clearance of .0008" (.020 mm) is exceeded, replace connecting rod bushing. To replace bushing, use press and Connecting Rod Bushing Remover/Installer (09222-30010) to press out bushing.
  4. Use press and bushing remover/installer to install bushing. Ensure oil holes in bushing and connecting rod are aligned. Hone new bushing to ensure standard clearance between piston pin and bushing.
  5. Coat pin with oil. Install new snap ring on one side of piston. Install pin into piston and rod. Ensure notch on piston and mark on connecting rod are aligned. See Figure. Install other new snap ring.
