Oil Pump Drive Shaft, Bearings & Bushings: Inspection
- Using a micrometer, measure and record oil pump drive shaft journal diameter. Standard journal diameter is 1.6126-1.6132" (40.960-40.975 mm) for front journal and 1.2976-1.2982" (32.959-32.974 mm) for rear journal.
- Using a telescopic bore gauge, measure and record front and rear drive shaft bearing bore diameters. To obtain clearance, subtract journal diameter readings from bore diameter readings.
- Standard clearance is .0010-.0026" (.025-.066 mm). If maximum clearance of .0031" (.078 mm) is exceeded, replace bearings and/or drive shaft.
- Using Bearing Remover/Replacer Set (09215-00100), replace bearings. Replace No. 1 bearing using No. 2 bearing as a guide. Replace No. 2 bearing using No. 1 bearing as a guide.NOTE: Ensure bearing oil holes are aligned during replacement.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure drive shaft thrust clearance between thrust plate and collar. Standard thrust clearance is .0024-.0051" (.061-.130 mm). If maximum thrust clearance of .0118" (.30 mm) is exceeded, replace thrust plate and/or collar.
- Mount Thrust Plate Puller (09950-20017) in vise. Install drive shaft in puller. Pull off thrust plate and collar. To replace thrust plate and collar, assemble on drive shaft and press into position.
- To replace oil pump guide bushing, drive bushing out from top side of engine block. To install bushing, drive bushing in from inner side of block. Ensure oil hole is aligned toward crankshaft side of engine block. Mark on bushing should face front of engine block.
